The Columbus State University softball team was chosen as the Columbus State University’s Stitch Central Cougars of the Week for the week ending on April 22.
The CSU softball team captured the program’s fourth Peach Belt Conference Tournament title this weekend and first since 2007. It was the first time in PBC history that a team won every game in the tournament as the lowest seed in the matchup. CSU entered the tournament as the fifth seed and defeated the number one, two and four seeds to claim the title.
The Lady Cougars took down Flagler 3-1 in the opening round of the tournament. Tournament MVP Mollie Russell tossed her first complete game of the tournament allowing just three hits in the contest. Casey Googe and Taylor Turner provided the offense as each hit a home run.
In the PBC Tournament semifinals, CSU took down top-seed and sixth-ranked Armstrong Atlantic State University 6-0. Russell threw another gem shutting out the Pirates on four hits while striking out seven batters.
CSU scored five runs in the fourth inning. Googe got the inning started with a double while Morgan Staffins and Kori Waugh each had a run scoring hit. Googe capped off the scoring by drawing a bases loaded walk.
In the championship game, Googe blasted a three-run shot in the third while Turner hit a single up the middle scoring Waugh in the fourth as the Lady Cougars knocked off three-time defending tournament champion and 11th ranked North Georgia 4-1. Russell closed out her great tournament performance by allowing one unearned run while the Saints mustered up just one hit.
During the tournament, Googe broke the single-season home run record for the PBC as she now has 21 bombs on the season. Russell was almost unhittable during the tournament tossing 21 innings allowing two unearned runs. She held her opponents to just a .110 average while punching out 11 batters.
Also, the Lady Cougars snapped Armstrong’s 18-game winning streak and North Georgia’s 15-game winning streak. It was also the NGA’s first loss in a PBC Tournament since 2008.
Joining Russell on the All-Tournament team was Googe and Turner.
