CSUCougars.com is reliving the top 10 moments of the 2011-12 academic year as the summer nears its end. At No. 5 is Casey Googe's march to the Peach Belt Conference single-season homerun record.

Googe Breaks PBC Homerun Record

Columbus – With two-outs and two-on in the Peach Belt Conference Tournament Championship game against three-time defending champion, North Georgia, Casey Googe stepped to the plate. It was the top of the third inning in a scoreless contest between two of the most dominating pitchers in the country. On a 2-2 pitch from 2011 National Pitcher of the Year Jessica Coan, Googe launched a homerun to dead centerfield to give the Lady Cougars a 3-0 lead that they would never relinquish.

The three-run blast helped Googe surpass the all-time single-season PBC homerun mark of 20 set by Cambria McKay of Kennesaw State and Stacey Berrong of USC Spartanburg (now USC Upstate).

She finished the season with 22 round-trippers after hitting a solo shot against Augusta State in the NCAA Tournament to end the season one shy of the national leaders.

Googe was a main cog that led a resurgent Lady Cougar club to a 40-20 record which won 13 of their final 16 games of the season and was one out away from playing in the NCAA Southeast Dahlonega Regional Championship game.

The catcher/shortstop ended the season with a .360 average and led the PBC with 55 runs batted in. She had a school record slugging percentage of .790 and 67 hits.

The sophomore became the 12th All-American in program history after being tabbed on the National Fastipitch Coaches Association All-America third team. She was also an honorable mention selection on the Daktronics All-America team.

The homerun didn’t just put Casey Googe in the record books and on the national scene, it lifted Columbus State back into national prominence.
