Griffin Leads Cougars to 20th Straight Victory
Columbus, GA -- Columbus State University took advantage of early wildness by Stillman College starter Chase Wilson en route to their 20th straight victory of the season.
The Cougars' 9-3 win over the Tigers at Ragsdale Field set another record for CSU as the team won its 14th straight home game. That broke the old mark of 13 set by the same 1986 squad that previously held the overall winning streak record.
Stillman came into the contest with an impressive streak of its own. The Tigers won 7 in a row and scored 127 runs during the streak.
Wilson struggled mightily in the first inning. The Cougars scored three times on only one hit, and took advantage of four walks issued by Wilson.
CSU added one run in the fourth and had a fairly comfortable 4-0 lead as the game approached its midpoint. But Stillman roared back with three runs in the bottom of the fourth and the Cougars emerged with a tiny 4-3 lead.
Freshman third baseman Cameron Griffin was the offensive hero for the Cougars, driving in three runs when they needed them most. Griffin's solo shot led off the sixth and he added a two-run, two-out blast in the seventh.
When the dust settled, the Cougars could breathe again with a five-run lead going into the final inning.
Brian Satterfield started on the mound for the Cougars. Satterfield gave up three earned runs in four innings before giving way to Robbie Nettles. Nettles tossed five shutout innings to pick up his second win of the season.
The Tigers won't have to wait long for the rematch. Game two of the short series is Wednesday afternoon at 3 at Ragsdale Field.
