Columbus – Brodie Leibrandt tossed a complete game shutout lifting the fifth ranked Columbus State University baseball team to a 1-0 victory over No. 7 Francis Marion. The game was the nightcap of a Sunday doubleheader played at Ragsdale Field.

The Cougars had the game's first scoring threat in the second inning as Brett Teschner reached base on an error and Seth Corbitt lined a single into centerfield for his first collegiate hit. After a passed ball moved both runners into scoring position, Don Sandifer struck out the next hitter to end the threat.

Francis Marion (6-4, 1-1) had things going in the fourth after Buddy Sosnoskie reached first on a throwing error by CSU shortstop Kenny Miller. Stephen Tarkenton singled into leftfield setting up a two-on no-out situation for the Patriots. However, Leibrandt induced a ground ball to Cameron Griffin who started an around-the-horn double play to record the first two outs of the frame. Will Chandler then flew out to centerfield to end the inning.

J.D. Pullen led the sixth inning off with an infield single in-between the first and second baseman and moved to second when Navarro Hall singled through the leftside. The two speedsters would be stranded as Sandifer registered three straight outs.

After Leibrandt got the first out in the seventh innings, FMU threatened when John Jones and Chandler hit back-to-back singles moving the winning run into scoring position. Like he did all game, Leibrandt kept the Patriot batters guessing inducing an infield fly and striking out Tyler Hibbs to end the inning.

Columbus State (8-1, 1-1) scored the lone run in the seventh as Eric Weiss led the frame off lacing a single into right-centerfield. He moved to second on a Cyle Rasmus bunt single. After a Cougar strike out, Miller blooped a singled into leftfield scoring Weiss for the winning run.

The Patriots got a runner on second with one-out in the eighth but Leibrandt got Sosnoskie to fly out and struck out pinch-hitter Luke Tollison.

For the game, Brodie Leibrandt (3-0) scattered seven hits in nine innings while striking out six batters. He did not walk anyone in his second complete game effort of the season.

J.D. Pullen and Cyle Rasmus each recorded two hits in the game for Columbus State.

Don Sanidifer (0-2) was on the losing side of the pitcher's dual as he tossed eight innings of one run ball. He struck out six hitters while allowing nine hits.

Columbus State and Francis Marion will play the rubber game of the series tomorrow afternoon at Ragsdale Field. First pitch will be at 1:30 p.m.
