Columbus – Northern Kentucky scored the game-winning run via a wild pitch in the seventh inning as the Norse took the rubber match of a three-game series by the score of 4-3 over the seventh ranked Columbus State University baseball team Sunday. The game was played at Ragsdale Field.

Jake Morris laced a double down the leftfield line with one-out in the top of the seventh and advanced to third on a wild pitch by new Cougar pitcher Levi Futo. After a walk, Futo threw yet another errant pitch allowing Morris to cross the plate.

Northern Kentucky (5-6) scored single runs in the second and third innings to take a 2-0 lead. In the second, Phil Smith reached base on a fielding error by Cougar shortstop Kenny Miller and moved to second on a walk. On a 1-1 count, Pat Williams singled through the right side of the infield to plate the first run of the game.

The Norse got a leadoff single by Brandon Wood and moved him to third on back-to-back groundouts. Brett Cisper reached base on an infield single that allowed Wood to cross to give the guests a 2-0 advantage.

Kenny Miller got things started for CSU in the third as he reached base on a one-out single. Cyle Rasmus singled during the next at-bat and while Miller was trying to advance to third, NKU's leftfielder made a key throwing error allowing Miller to score all the way from first.

Rasmus proceeded to steal third base and later scored on a Cameron Scott single to leftfield to tie the game at two.

Northern Kentucky received another gift from Columbus State in the fourth inning as Smith reached base on a fielding error. Smith stole second and advanced to third on a wild pitch before scoring on a Pat Williams single up the middle giving the Norse a 3-2 lead.

Cameron Scott led the bottom of the sixth off with a single. Brett Teschner reached base on a fielder's choice and advanced to second on the play due to a throwing error.

A flyout was the second out of the inning before back-to-back walks loaded the bases for Kevan Dorsey. Dorsey was able to beat out an infield hit allowing the tying run to score. However, the Cougars could not push across another run as the Norse scored the game-winning run in the seventh.

Brodie Leibrandt (4-1) was struck with his first loss of the season pitching 6.1 innings allowing four runs (two earned) on four hits. He struck out five while issuing just one walk.

Cyle Rasmus led the offensive attack for CSU going 3-for-4 and scored a run as well. Cameron Scott picked up two more hits while driving in a run.

Columbus State will hit the road traveling to Florida to take on defending National Champs West Florida. The two-game series will begin on Tuesday, March 6 at 5:00 p.m.
