Columbus – The Peach Belt Conference announced its 2012 All-Conference teams Tuesday night at its annual baseball award banquet at the Columbus Trade Center in Columbus. Columbus State junior designated hitter Cameron Scott and starting pitcher Brodie Leibrandt were both named second team All-PBC players.
It is the second straight season that Scott has been honored by the PBC as he was named to the first team last season. For Leibrandt, it is his first conference accolade since joining the Cougars in 2010.
Scott got off to a torrid start in 2012. Through the first eight games this year, Scott was hitting .704 with 20 RBIs. Half of the 20 runs batted in came against Clark Atlanta as the switch hitter tied a PBC record by recording 10 RBIs in a single game. He had 12 games this season in which he had at least two runs batted in.
The Griffin, GA native leads the team in hits (68), doubles (16) and is second on the squad in home runs (six), RBIs (47), batting average (.342) and slugging percentage (.513).
Leibrandt was the ace of the Cougar staff this season. Mainly the second starter in the weekend rotation, Leibrandt kept the opponents off stride by using his off-speed pitches effectively. So far this season, the southpaw is 6-5 with an earned run average of 2.66. In 13 starts, he has gone the distance in five of them, which is tied for the most complete games in the PBC this year.
The junior has two shutouts this season including blanking then seventh-ranked Francis Marion 1-0.
Armstrong Atlantic State University, the PBC regular season champions, won two of the major awards Tuesday night. Zach Taylor was named the Player of the Year while head coach Joe Roberts was tabbed the Coach of the Year. Lander pitcher Chris Thomas was named the Pitcher of the Year and USC Aiken's power hitting freshman Will Tankersley was named the Freshman of the Year.
The Peach Belt Conference Tournament gets under way tomorrow morning at 9:00 a.m. at historic Golden Park in downtown Columbus. Columbus State will play the final game of the day at 7:30 p.m. against Francis Marion.
