Columbus State vs. West Alabama Game Notes
Columbus – After a 10 day lay-off, the Columbus State men's basketball team returns to the hardwood Wednesday evening as they travel to Livingston, Alabama to face off against West Alabama in a non-conference matchup. Tip-off is set for 7:00 p.m. inside Pruit Hall.
Scouting Columbus State
Coming off their longest break of the year, the Cougars (2-1) will be looking to get back in the win column after suffering their first loss of the season, a 78-68 defeat at the hands of West Georgia on November 19. CSU never found an offensive rhythm in the contest making just 34.3% of their field goal attempts and were also out-rebounded in the game. Four different players scored in double figures for Columbus State led by Steve Peterson, who netted 19 points.
Defensively, CSU had no answer for Da'Ron Sims who scored a game-high 28 points on 12-of-24 shooting from the field. Ryan Godfrey and Gavin Field chipped in with 15 and 11 points, respectively. West Georgia used a 16-4 run midway through the second half to pull away for the victory.
For the season, Idell Bell paces the team in scoring with a 15.7 points per game average. The mark ranks him tenth in the Peach Belt Conference while he is also fifth in three-point field goal percentage knocking down shots from long range at a 52.6% clip. Dimitri Davis (3rd) and Darius Mcknight (6th) are both in the top 10 in field goal percentage coming in at 75% and 62.5%, respectively.
Scouting West Alabama
West Alabama (1-5) has really tested itself to begin the season under first-year head coach Mike Newell. Three of their first six regular season matchups have been against a Division I opponent while also playing two more in exhibitions. The Tigers earned their lone win of the year in its season opener, a 77-46 drubbing of Barry University.
UWA is led offensively by Ryan Fitch (13.0 ppg) and Jared Woolfolk (11.8 ppg) as the Tigers as a team put up 61.3 points a contest. Darrion Booker is their leading rebound pulling down 5.3 boards per game.
Series History
West Alabama has dominated the series winning all eight matchups between the two sides. This will be the first meeting since December 9, 1989 in which the Tigers won 75-61. UWA is 3-0 all-time versus CSU in Livingston.
