Columbus – After their sixth place finish at the Sandestin Collegiate Championship, the Columbus State University men's golf team returns home to host the annual Aflac/Cougar Invitational at the Country Club of Columbus. The two-day event will kick off Monday, October 3 at 8:30 a.m.
The 13th ranked Cougars will welcome eight other ranked teams (No. 3 Lynn, No. 4 Barry, No. 8 North Alabama, No. 14 Georgia College, No. 19 Newberry, No. 20 Florida Southern No. 21 Flagler and No. 24 Georgia Southwestern) in the Golf World/Nike Golf Coaches' Poll into Columbus. Carson-Newman, Clayton State, Coker, Delta State, Florida Tech, Lander, Queens of Charlotte and Valdosta State will round out the field.
"Every year this field is usually one of the toughest we face throughout the season", said head coach Mark Immelman. "This year is definitely no different. It might be the best 17 team field that we have ever hosted."
The Cougars are off to a good start on the season missing out on a top-five finish by three strokes in a tough field at the Sandestin Collegiate Championship. Four out of the top five teams in the tournament are competing in the Aflac/Cougar Invitation including tournament champion Lynn.
All-American Rourke Van der Spuy finished tied for sixth place at the Sandestin with a three-over par 216 score (67,74,75). Justin Grice also had a great showing finishing in a tie for 12th place with a five-over 218 score (73, 74, 71).
Last season, Columbus State won the Aflac/Cougar Invitational by one stroke over North Alabama and Valdosta State in a 36-hole affair. Match play was conducted on the second day of the event. However, this year's version of the invitational will be three rounds of stroke play with 36-holes being played Monday and the last 18 on Tuesday.
