No. 9 Columbus State Men’s Tennis Takes Down Samford 5-2
Samford, AL – The ninth ranked Columbus State men's tennis team defeated Samford 5-2 Saturday evening at the Pat M. Courington Tennis Pavilion. The Cougars improve to 5-1 on the season while SU drops to 7-2 on the year.
Samford is a NCAA Division I member of the Southern Conference and had won six straight matches before suffering the loss.
Using NCAA Division I scoring rules, doubles play only awarded one point to the team that won two-of-three matches in doubles action.
Samford's duo of Carl Abalos and Oliver Reynolds bested the Cougars pair of Christophe Noblet and Gordan Divljak 8-3. CSU responded winning the next two tightly contested matches. Pasqual Duttlinger and Andre Mordhorst defeated Zac Dunkle and Alex Sajonz 9-7 while Filip Cojbasic and Martin Shishkov took down Carson Kadi and Fernadno Costa 9-8.
In singles action, Samford started on top with Kadi winning 4-6, 6-2 and 6-2 over Noblet. Divljak (6-4, 3-6 and 6-4) and Duttlinger (6-4 and 6-4) then got Columbus State back on the winning track to take 3-1 lead in the match.
After Oliver Reynolds defeated Mordhorst (CSU) 6-3 and 6-4, Shishkov clinched the win for the Cougars with an easy 6-2 and 6-1 victory over Costa. Danilo Sardelli closed out the match with a 6-7, 6-3 and 6-2 win over Sajonz.
