No. 8 Columbus State Men's Tennis Defeats North Georgia in PBC Tournament

Greenwood, SC – The eighth-ranked Columbus State University men's tennis team made its first step towards the Peach Belt Conference Tournament Championship match Friday morning as they defeated 25th ranked North Georgia 5-1 in the opening round of the 21st annual PBC Tournament. The tournament is being hosted by Lander at the Joe Cabri Tennis Center in Greenwood, South Carolina.
The Cougars (21-2) took an early advantage after doubles winning two out of the three matches. At first doubles, Gordan Divljak and Quentin Rayniere improved to 22-0 this season after defeating Felipe Friedrich and Mateus Camasmie 8-4. The second team All-PBC duo of Olivier Simonet and Martin Shishkov needed an extra game to dispose of Mathew Guida and Rodrigo Magan wining the match 9-7. The Saints (14-8) recorded their only victory of the day at third doubles as Giovani Santos and Brandon Sloan defeated Adi Malicbegovic and Michael Trebuhov 8-6.
In singles play, Rayniere continued his great freshman campaign as he took down Guida 6-2, 6-2 at third singles. Trebuhov gave the Cougars their fourth victory of the morning at fifth singles defeating Santos 6-1, 6-3. Danilo Sardelli clinched the match for Columbus State as he took down Sloan in straight sets at sixth singles 6-4, 6-2.
When play was suspended, 23rd ranked Simonet was down a set to Friedrich but was winning 5-1 in the second set of play at first singles. At second singles, 48th ranked Divljak was just three games away from beating Camasmile in straight sets. At fourth singles, Shishkov won set one 7-6 over Magan.
Columbus State will now advance to the semifinals of the Peach Belt Conference Tournament and will either play third-seeded Lander or sixth-seeded Augusta State. The match will begin at 4:00 p.m. Saturday, April 21.
