Auburn – The Columbus State track and field teams competed in the 2011 War Eagle Invitational hosted by Auburn University. The Cougars participated in a field full of Division I schools which included many participants in the NCAA National Championship last season.
In women's action, Shelisia Crawford was again one of the top performers for Columbus State. The junior placed 14th in the in her preliminary of the 100-meter dash with a time of 11.88 seconds. Her teammate Asha Alexander also ran in the same preliminary and finished in 37th place with a time of 12.34. Crawford also competed in the 200-meter dash and placed eighth with a quick time of 23.87 seconds. Alexander crossed the line in 25.01 seconds which placed her 36th in the event.
Columbus State had a great showing in the 5000-meter run. Ashley Arnold just missed out on a top 10 performance as she came across the line in 18:31.03 minutes which was good enough for 11th place. Brittney Skiles was right behind her teammate as she finished in 15th place with a time of 18:57.28 minutes. Moneque English came in 21st place (19:14.99) for the Lady Cougars
In the men's portion, Ian Edwards was the top performer finishing inside the top 15 in two different events. Edwards placed 15th in the 1500-meter run crossing the line in 4:06.31 minutes. The freshman was also one of the four Cougars who finished inside the top 20 in the 5000-meter run. Stewart Helton led the way in the event as he finished in 10th place with a time of 15:12.13 minutes. He was followed by Edwards (11th, 15:14.34), Stephen Bowers (15th, 15:17.13) and John Neill (18th, 15:31.63) who all had great performances in the race.
Jeremy Williams competed in the 400-meter dash finishing in 17th place with a time of 48.74 seconds just 13 hundredths of a second slower than the Cougar record which he holds. Gerald Chichester also competed in the dash as he finished in 33rd place crossing the line in 49.75 seconds.
Columbus State will be back in action next weekend as they travel to compete in the Coach O Invitational hosted by Troy University on April 23.
