Carr Impressive in First Collegiate Start
Albany – Kristen Carr pitched six solid innings in her first collegiate start and the Columbus State offense scored six runs in the first three innings to lift CSU to an 8-1 victory over Albany State Wednesday afternoon in a non-conference matchup.
After allowing a run on a pair of singles in the first inning, Carr (1-0) settled in to throw five shutout frames including surrendering just one hit over that span. The right-hander struck out five batters in the contest and did not issue a walk.
Nina Rubio got things going for CSU in the first with a one-out infield single. Casey Googe then ripped a double to leftfield plating Rubio. Columbus State (5-5) was able to tack on two more runs an inning later as Sydney Finley and Kristen Gregory had back-to-back one-out singles. Morgan Knight hit a double down the rightfield line driving in Finley and putting runners on second and third. Rubio was up next and drove in Knight giving CSU a commanding 5-1 advantage.
Taylor Turner put the sixth run on the board for the Lady Cougars singling through the left side which brought in Kori Waugh.
CSU added two insurance runs in the seventh inning, one on a wild pitch and the other on a groundout.
Knight paced the offense going 3-for-4 scoring once and driving in one. Rubio and Gregory also had multi-hit performances for the Lady Cougars. Eight of the nine starters for CSU recorded at least one hit.
