Columbus – Kara Gordon hit a two-run home run in the bottom of the third inning while freshman Taylor Turner threw a three-hit complete game shutout as the Columbus State University softball team defeated Lincoln Memorial  5-0 Friday afternoon in the first game of the Cougar Classic played at South Commons in Columbus.

The Lady Cougars (7-5) scored the game's first run in the bottom of the first inning as Morgan Knight hit a double with one-out. After a ground out, Kara Gordon had a big two-out single into leftfield scoring Knight to give CSU a 1-0 lead.

Knight again started the rally in the third leading the frame off with a single down the leftfield line and advanced to second on an error by the second baseman. Casey Googe drove her teammate in with a single through the left side of the infield before Gordon stepped up to the plate and drove a shot over the centerfield wall giving the Lady Cougars a 4-0 lead.

CSU added an insurance run in the sixth as junior Kelsey Gilliam hit a home run to right field.

Taylor Turner (3-0) had her best stuff of the season allowing just one Lincoln Memorial player to reach second base and LMU did not have two runners on base at one time during the contest. Turner struck out four while not issuing a free pass in her seven innings of work.

Kara Gordon ended the afternoon 2-for-3 with three RBIs. Morgan Knight also had two hits while scoring two runs.

Meghan LaFevor (3-2) pitched all six innings for Lincoln Memorial allowing five runs on seven hits. She walked four while also striking out four.
