Lady Cougars Handle West Florida 4-0

Columbus – The offense for Columbus State knocked out West Florida starter Ashliegh McLean after just two innings and Mollie Russell tossed another shutout as the Lady Cougars defeated UWF 4-0 Saturday afternoon in the second to last game of the Cougar Classic which was played at South Commons in Columbus.
CSU scored in three consecutive innings beginning in the second. Morgan Staffins began the rally with a one-out single to left-centerfield. Three straight batters were then hit by a pitch to bring across Staffins. Sydney Finley singled in Kori Waugh for the final run of the frame putting the Lady Cougars in front 2-0.
Morgan Knight and Brooke Nail closed out the scoring in the contest as each hit a leadoff homerun in the third and fourth inning, respectively. Columbus State threatened to tack on more runs in both of those innings, but left on a total of four base runners.
Russell was dominant again in the circle for the Lady Cougars as she went the distance allowing only three hits and striking out 13. In her two appearances in the Cougar Classic, the junior struck out 28 batters while allowing only five hits over 14 innings.
She also upped the pitching staff scoreless streak up to 32 innings.
Six different hitters picked up a hit for CSU led by Sydney Finley's 2-for-3 performance. Nail's homerun in the fourth was her first collegiate homerun.
McLean suffered the loss for West Florida falling to 2-3 on the year allowing three runs on three hits and hitting three batters. Jordan Ratliff worked the final four innings surrendering one run on four hits and a pair of walks. Kaley Kania, Amber Ingram and Crystal Thompson had the three Argo hits.
