Columbus – Columbus State jumped out to a 5-0 lead and held on to defeat West Georgia by a score of 5-3 Wednesday afternoon in a non-conference matchup at Cougar Field in Columbus, Georgia.
The Lady Cougars got on the board in the second inning with one swing of the bat as Kori Waugh launched a one-out solo blast to left-centerfield for her sixth long ball of the season. After another out, Kristen Gregory then did her best imitation of Waugh hitting her second homer this year.
CSU put the game away in the fifth posting three more runs to make it a 5-0 ballgame. The big fly was Columbus State's best friend again as Casey Googe hit a two-run shot over the leftfield wall. Branigan Wix scored on the play after drawing a lead-off walk. Kara Gordon was then hit by a pitch and advanced to second on a single by Morgan Staffins. Two wild pitches allowed Gordon to cross the plate for the Lady Cougars final run of the contest.
West Georgia tried to make things interesting in the seventh with the aid of a CSU error. A walk and a single put runners on first and second before both advanced a base on a groundout. Ashley Langley then singled in the Wolves first run with a base knock to leftfield. The second run came across on a fielding error before UWG notched their third on a fielder's choice.
Mollie Russell earned the win for Columbus State tossing all seven innings allowing three runs (two earned) on nine hits and a walk. She struck out five as the junior improved to 14-10 on the year. Googe and Gregory both had two hits while Waugh extended her hitting streak to six games.
Antoinette Diaz suffered the loss falling to 7-14 as she allowed five runs on six hits and three walks over five innings. Langley went a perfect 3-for-3 at the dish while Imani Cabel also had a multi-hit performance going 2-for-4.
