Columbus – The Columbus State University women's basketball team shot 49.3 percent from field as they cruised to an 83-48 victory over Flagler in a Peach Belt Conference tilt Saturday afternoon in the Lumpkin Center.
The 35-point win was the largest margin of victory for the Lady Cougars this season.
With the victory, Columbus State has now won four of their past five games and improve their overall record to 9-6. CSU is 4-2 inside the Peach Belt Conference while Flagler stands at 2-12 overall and 1-7 in league action.
Flagler got on the board first as Charlsea Owens knocked down a jumper to give the Saints the early 2-0 lead. It was the FC's only lead of the game as Columbus State outscored the visitors 25-6 over the next 12 minutes to take a commanding 25-8 advantage. The Lady Cougars started the outburst by going on a 12-0 run with Dominique Gilbert netting six points and Asha Alexander chipping in four of her own.
The Lady Cougars continued their hot first half shooting as they stretched their lead to 23-points (42-19) as Lauren Grisham connected on her second three-pointer of the half with 1:20 to go till the break.
Columbus State took a 44-23 advantage to the locker room behind a sizzling 51.3 shooting percentage (20-for-39) and 11 second chance points.
Coming out of the half, CSU continued pouring in the points. After the two sides exchanged baskets to begin the second frame, the Lady Cougars went on an impressive 18-2 run to stretch their lead to 77-38 with 4:45 remaining in the game. The 39-point margin was CSU's largest lead of the game. Flagler would cut the lead down with 31 before Columbus State scored the last two buckets of the game.
The Lady Cougars shot 49.3 percent (37-for-75) from the floor, which was their best shooting percentage since the season opener against Barry (52.3 percent). It was also the second highest point total for CSU this season (86 vs. Barry).
Dominique Gilbert scored a game high 20 points and was one rebound shy of her sixth double-double of the season. It was the second consecutive game that the senior has scored 20 or more points. Lauren Grisham scored a season best 15 points while knocking down three three-point shots. Chatil Bradford was the only other Lady Cougar to score in double-figures as she netted in 13.
It was the third consecutive game that Carrie Washington has grabbed eight rebounds. The sophomore is now third on the team in rebounding averaging 5.6 boards a night.
CSU also dished out a season high 19 assists led by Baleigh Coley who had a team high five dimes.
Charlsea Owen scored 11 points for Flager as the Saints shot only 30.8 percent (20-for-65) from the floor.
Columbus State will now have six days to prepare for Lander as the Lady Cougars will travel to Greenwood, SC to battle one of the premier programs of the Peach Belt Conference. Tip-off is set for 1:30 p.m. on Saturday, January 21.
