Augusta, GA – The Columbus State University women's basketball team only mustered up 51 points but still managed to pull out a 51-41 victory against Augusta State Monday evening in a Peach Belt Conference match-up. The game was played in Christenberry Fieldhouse on the campus of Augusta State.
The 51-points scored by the Lady Cougars tied a school record for the least amount of points scored in a CSU victory. The previous time came on December 14, 2008 when Columbus State defeated West Georgia 51-50.
With the victory, Columbus State improves to 10-7 on the season and 5-3 in league action while Augusta State falls 8-10 and 3-7 inside the PBC.
"I'm so proud of our girls tonight", stated CSU head coach Jonathan Norton. "We had no offense for most of the night, however we did not let that affect us on the defensive side of the ball."
Dominique Gilbert was the offensive hero for CSU as she recorded her sixth double-double of the season. The senior scored 21 points after being held to just five against Lander on Saturday. She grabbed a season best 15 rebounds while also blocking a shot and corralling three steals.
Gilbert also became the 19th player in Columbus State history to score 600 or more career points in a Lady Cougar uniform. She now has 619 points in her 44 game CSU career.
Neither team could find a rhythm early on in the game as the two sides combined to go 0-for-7 before Tiffany Jaecks gave Augusta State their only lead of the game with a layup at the 18:29 mark.
After Amber Peterson drained a three-point shot for the Jaguars to make the score 8-7 CSU, the Lady Cougars would proceeded to outscore ASU 13-4 in the final 11:24 to take a 21-11 lead into the locker room. CSU started the spurt by going on a 9-0 run. Gilbert and Shan Basley each scored eight points during the span.
Coming out of the break, Columbus State would miss their first four shot attempts and committed two turnovers while the Jags netted in seven of the first 11 points of the half to cut the CSU lead down to 25-18 with 15:41 remaining in the game.
Augusta State would continue chipping away at the Lady Cougar lead cutting the margin down to one (29-28) with 7:55 to go thanks in part to a 7-0 run. Four different ASU players scored during the spurt.
From that point on, Columbus State outscored the Jaguars 22-13 with Gilbert and Basley combining for 20 of the 22 Lady Cougar points. Gilbert herself had 14 during the final 7:55 of the game.
Shan Basley was 4-of-9 from the floor netting 13 points for Columbus State. The junior also dished out a team best four assists.
As a team, CSU was just 1-for-11 from three-point range.
Tiffany Jaecks and Jemimah Ashby both scored 10 points for Augusta State while Brittany White tallied seven assists. Augusta State was held to just a 30.9 percent (17-for-55) mark from the floor.
Columbus State will now have a couple of days to prepare for UNC Pembroke as the Lady Braves come into the Lumpkin Center on Saturday, January 28. Tip-off will be at 1:30 p.m.
