Lady Cougars Set For PBC Quarterfinals Against UNC Pembroke
The Columbus State women's basketball team will open up play in the Peach Belt Conference Tournament when they take on UNC Pembroke Thursday night in the opening round of the tournament. Tipoff is scheduled for 7:00 p.m. inside the Lumpkin enter.
CSU enters the contest as the number two seed from the West Division after finishing the regular season with an 11-6 mark in league play and 16-10 record overall. They have won four out of their last five games including a 64-54 victory over Georgia Southwestern on the final day of the regular season to lock up the second seed.
Leading the way for the Lady Cougars is Dominique Gilbert, a two-time All-PBC honoree including receiving first team honors this season. She paces the team with 14.4 points and 9.3 rebounds per game. The Albany native has posted 11 double-doubles on the year and scored a season high 24 points versus Armstrong this year.
Shan Basley (9.2), Letiecia Davenport (7.8) and Asha Alexander (7.6) all average over seven points a contest to help balance the offense. Basley leads the team with 85 assists and is tied for the team lead in steals with 30. Marina DeFoor has made 30 three-pointers this season while Basley and Lauren Grisham have each connected on 27 apiece.
As a team, opponents are shooting just 35.3% against Columbus State, tied for the league best mark. They also allow only 58.8 points a contest and rank in the top five in blocks, rebounds and rebounding margin.
UNC Pembroke is the number three seed out of the East Division and enters the game with a 12-6 record in the PBC and an overall mark of 15-11.
The Lady Braves are led by Courtney Bolton, who averages 12.0 points per game. Bolton, a third team All-Peach Belt Conference selection, is shooting 53.3 percent from the floor and brings in 5.5 rebounds per game. DeDe Cotton is also a scoring threat for the Lady Braves as she averages 10 points per game. The senior is one of the best three-point shooters in the league as she has knocked down 57 three's this season, the third most in the conference.
Senior point guard Domonique Washington is the floor general as she dishes out 3.3 assists per game while averaging 2.7 steals and 9.6 points per night. Freshman Jazmine Kemp leads UNC Pembroke in rebounding grabbing 6.3 boards per game.
Earlier this season, Columbus State defeated the Lady Braves 64-48 in the Lumpkin Center behind an impressive 22-6 run to close out the first half. Gilbert netted a game high 20 points and 12 rebounds while Lauren Matheney and Chatil Bradford each chipped in with eight points.
