The Columbus State women's soccer team will hit the pitch on Wednesday, October 19 as they look to extend their four-game winning streak against the surprise team of the Peach Belt Conference, Clayton State. The match is set to begin at 7:00 p.m. at Laker Field in Morrow, GA.
Scouting Columbus State
The Lady Cougars (10-3-2) are playing their best soccer of the year at the right time as they have dominated the past four games. During that span, CSU has outshot their opponents 80-32 and outscored their opponents 12-3. The defense has also stepped up in the past two games allowing just 12 shots in back-to-back shutout performances.
In their last game, Columbus State dominated play as they defeated West Georgia 4-0. Ashley Miller was the standout performer netting her first two goals on the season.
Opening the scoring was junior forward Emily Husted as she put her sixth goal of the season in the back of the net in the 22nd minute. Miller then found the back of the net just seven minutes later curling a shot to the back left corner of the goal. Freshman Kelsey Pelletier registered the third goal in the contest as Christine Kelly crossed a great pass to the speedster setting up a one versus one with the UWG goalie. Miller closed out the scoring for the Lady Cougars in the 55th minute of play.
All-American Stephanie Lowery picked up two assists in the contest. The senior is currently tied for fourth place in the PBC in total points with 19.
Mary Mancin picked up her 10th victory on the season as she was a part of the team's seventh shutout on the season. The Gainesville, GA native currently ranks third in the conference with a 0.68 goals against average.
Scouting Clayton State
The Lakers (7-5-1) are having their best season since 2007 when they finished the season with a 9-6-1 record and in fifth in the Peach Belt Conference. Since 2007, Clayton has had an overall record of 11-36-3 and a 7-19-2 mark inside the conference.
Recently, the Lakers have also been playing well having not allowed a goal in the past five contests going 4-0-1 in that span. In their last game, the Lakers played to a scoreless draw against UNC Pembroke as they moved into fifth place in the PBC standings.
Leading the Lakers is Natalia Valentine who currently has nine goals on the season and also one assist. Her nine goals, are the second most inside the conference this season. Josephine Holsten is the second leading scoring on the team with three goals.
Junior goalkeeper Laoise O'Driscoll has also been fantastic for Clayton State. O'Driscoll has not allowed a goal in over 513 minutes and ranks second in the PBC with 66 saves.
Columbus State holds a 7-2 edge over Clayton State in the series history. The last time the Lakers defeated the Lady Cougars was in the 2005 Peach Belt Conference Tournament Title game as Clayton came away with a 2-1 victory in overtime.
