Columbus State to Face Off Against Lewis in Round of 16
Columbus – After sweeping 10th ranked Francis Marion Monday afternoon to advance to the Round of 16 in Louisville, Kentucky, the Columbus State University women's tennis team found out their opponent yesterday evening. The Lady Cougars will take on Lewis University after the Flyers won the Midwest Regional in dramatic fashion defeating Northwood 5-4.
The Lady Cougars will be making their fourth trip to the Round of 16 in program history and the first since the 2006 campaign. This season, CSU set a new school record for wins in a season with 27.
On the other hand, 22nd ranked Lewis is a rising program in the Midwest Region claiming their first-ever regional championship this week. The Flyers boast a 24-2 record and won the Great Lakes Valley Conference Tournament Championship for the first time in school history last month.
Zsofia Lanstiak, who currently has a 36-2 record this year and has won 30 straight matches, leads the Flyers. She is the top-ranked player in the Midwest Region and 25th nationally. Also her teammate, Zsofia Kranxzicki is very tough at second singles as she is 35-5 this season. She is ranked second in the region and 32nd nationally.
Columbus State remained seventh in the latest national rankings released today. Peach Belt Conference Player of the Year, Paola Cigui continued her climb up the national poll as she is now fifth. Cigui is a perfect 23-0 this season and has lost just three sets all year.
Milica Tomic made her first appearance in the national rankings as a singles player coming in at 43rd. Tomic is currently 16-6 and is 4-3 playing at the second singles position.
The duo of Cigui and Tomic made an impressive leap in the rankings moving up to sixth. As a tandem, they are 12-2 and have defeated three nationally ranked foes.
Columbus State and Lewis will begin their match at 8:00 a.m. on Wednesday, May 16. The match will take place at E.P. Tom Sawyer State Park in Louisville.
