Charlie (Spike) Whittington played three seasons for the Cougars. As a sophomore, Whittington won twice, finished fifth at the National Tournament, was named Honorable Mention All-American, and his team finished third in the county. As the team captain his senior season, his 71.7 stroke average was the best in Division II and earned him a first team All-American selection. As a senior he won four tournaments and finished in the top 10 in 12 of 13 tournaments played. His third place finish at the National Tournament helped the Cougars capture the 1989 National Championship. He was also named the CSU Male Athlete of the Year.
