Towson, MD - Junior Kayla Brown was selected to the Capital One/CoSIDA Division II Academic All-America Third Team after a tremendous season on and off the field for the Columbus State University women's soccer team. This is the first time in her career that Brown has been honored as an All-American for her achievements in the classroom.
Brown is an attacking defender who is a part of a backline that posted 12 shutouts and allowed just 14 goals all season. The 12 shutouts were tied for the 15th most nationally and the Lady Cougars had just a 0.59 goals against average which also ranked 15th nationally. She also chipped in the on the offensive side of the ball tallying three assists this season.
The junior was selected to the 2011 All-Peach Belt Conference First Team earlier in the year and was a NSCAA All-Southeast Region Second Team honoree in 2009. She was also selected as an Academic All-PBC player this season. Brown has been a member of the PBC Honor Roll in each of her first two years at Columbus State.
Brown currently has a 3.9 GPA and is majoring in Communications.
Ashley Botts of Grand Valley State was selected as the Academic All-America Player of the Year. This season, Botts scored 19 goals with 10 assists for 48 points. Grand Valley also won the fifth consecutive conference championship and a berth in the NCAA Division II Final Four.
Nominations and voting for the team were conducted by members of CoSIDA. There is a University Division (Division I programs) and a College Division (DII, DIII, NAIA, NJCAA programs).
To be nominated, student-athletes were required to have a cumulative grade point average of at least 3.30 (on a 4.0 scale) in both undergrad and graduate work, reached sophomore athletic and academic standing and completed at least one academic year at their institution.
