Stephen WilliamsCOLUMBUS – The Columbus State University volleyball team fell in straight sets 3-0 (25-21, 25-15, 25-18) on Saturday against USC Aiken inside the Lumpkin Center.
Freshman
Savannah Miller turned in a career-high eight kills on the day to lead the Lady Cougars.
Megan Frame and
Andrea Skipor picked up six each, while
Cori Ehmen led the defense with nine digs to go alongside 23 assists.
"I thought we did a good job today with termination," said head coach
Casey Cornett. "Our defense was not as strong as last night though.
"We will go back to work on Monday and try to get better and prepare for Georgia College."
Columbus State (2-13, 0-5) got off to a roaring start, taking five of the match's first six points. Skipor served a pair of aces, while Miller and Frame each tallied kills.
The Lady Cougars held an 8-4 lead when USC Aiken (10-3, 3-3) made its early run. The Pacers took five straight points to move out in front and, after a service error, picked up four more to lead 13-9.
Late in the set, a block by Skipor and
Kylie Beaubien followed by another Skipor kill brought the Lady Cougars back within three (23-20), but USCA took two of the next three points for the early advantage.
An early run in the second set had the Pacers off and running in a set they controlled throughout. USCA scored five straight points for a 7-3 lead and they would hold onto it the rest of the way.
Columbus State battled again in the third set, however an early deficit proved again to be too much to overcome. Frame turned in three kills and a solo block during the set. Freshman
Abby King had two of her four kills in the final frame.
Columbus State will wrap up a three-match home stand on Tuesday night as Georgia College will come to town. The Bobcats defeated CSU 3-0 on Sept. 19 in Milledgeville, Ga. First serve from the Lumpkin Center is set for 6 p.m.
