Lady Cougars Begin Season Wednesday

COLUMBUS – The reigning Peach Belt Conference and Southeast Region champion Columbus State University women's basketball team will take the floor for the first time on Wednesday night against No. 18 West Florida. Tipoff is scheduled for 5:30 p.m. in the Lumpkin Center.

Last Meeting
 
Columbus State held a 16-point lead at halftime, but was outscored by 24 points in the second half of a 73-65 loss against UWF on Dec. 2, 2011. Shan Basley led the Lady Cougars with 16 points on the night.
 
Series History
 
Wednesday's game will be the sixth in the all-time series between the two programs. West Florida holds a narrow 3-2 advantage in the five previous meetings.
 
About West Florida
 
UWF is off to a 2-0 start after wins over Albany State and Fort Valley State in Valdosta, Ga. last weekend.
 
The Argos are coming off a school record 28 victories in 2016-17, winning their first ever Gulf South Conference and NCAA South Region championship.
 
West Florida returns eight players off last season's GSC Championship squad.
 
Halee Nieman led the Argos in scoring through the first two games, scoring 19.5 points per game.

Head coach Anita Howard is set to begin her second season at the helm of the Lady Cougar program after leading CSU to PBC and Southeast Region titles last year.
 
The Lady Cougars will have a brand new starting lineup this season after losing all five starters off the 2016-17 team.
 
Tatiana Wayne is the top returning scorer from last season, as she averaged 5.0 points per game off the bench.
 
CSU was a perfect 17-0 on its home court last season.
