FLORENCE, S.C. – A layup with four seconds remaining handed the Columbus State University women's basketball team a 79-78 loss at Francis Marion Tuesday evening. The Peach Belt Conference contest was played in Florence, S.C.
With the game tied at 77,
Tatiana Wayne's 3-point attempt banged off the rim and
Zoi Thompson ended up corralling the loose ball. Thompson was fouled on the rebound and split a pair of free throws to give CSU a one-point lead with 7.4 seconds remaining.
After advancing the ball with a timeout, Francis Marion (5-3, 2-1 PBC) took the inbounds pass and went straight to the rim a knocked down the eventual game-winner.
Jasmine Herndon had the final look for the Lady Cougars, but her shot was off the mark.
"We had our chances tonight," head coach
Anita Howard said. "Give Francis Marion credit for making plays down the stretch.
"This was a game that went back-and-forth all night and they ultimately made the last play."
The night started slow for Columbus State (4-3, 2-1), as the Lady Cougars fell behind 28-18 after the opening quarter. CSU looked more like itself in the second quarter, starting with six straight points and pulling itself within one at 38-37 when the game went to halftime.
The Lady Cougars opened up a six-point edge midway through the third quarter, but an 11-4 FMU run to close the quarter sent the game to the fourth with FMU in front.
Tatiana Wayne led the Lady Cougars with 21 points on the night.
Tatum Jarvis scored 15 off the bench, while
Machala Raymonville finished with 14 and
Jasmine Herndon added 10.
CSU shot 45.5 percent as a team and made just five 3-pointers one game after making 15 against UNC Pembroke.
Columbus State will now have 11 days before its next game, a home contest against USC Aiken on Dec. 30. Tipoff in the Lumpkin Center is scheduled for 1:30 p.m.
