MISENHEIMER, N.C. – The Columbus State University softball team suffered a pair of losses on Sunday, falling 4-3 and 6-4 at Pfeiffer. The games were played at Jack Ingram Field.
Â
"We did a good job battling today," head coach
Brad Huskisson said. "However, we continue to let a couple bad innings be our downfall.
Â
"We have to continue working because we have a big week ahead of us."
Â
Columbus State will be on the road on Wednesday for a doubleheader at West Georgia. First pitch from Carrollton is scheduled for 4 p.m.
Â
Game One
Â
Lady Cougar starter
Darby Demarest danced in and out of trouble in Sunday's opener. The sophomore stranded seven Pfeiffer runners over the first three innings to keep the game scoreless.
Â
The Falcons finally broke through in the fourth, plating a pair of runs with two outs before adding another in the fifth.
Â
Columbus State (7-6-1) battled back though, scoring three times in the sixth to tie the game.
Keeli Waugh and
Kia Smith singled to start the frame and moved up on a sacrifice bunt. With two down,
Calli Star delivered with a two-run single to right field to bring the Lady Cougars within one.
Kayleigh Briant then knotted the game at three with a run-scoring single of her own.
Â
Both teams failed to score in the seventh, sending the game into extra innings. After CSU failed to score in the top half, Pfeiffer executed well and walked off with a sacrifice fly for the win.
Â
Demarest (2-3) went the distance for the Lady Cougars, allowing four runs (two earned) and striking out seven.
Â
Waugh and Smith were both 2-for-4 with a run scored.
Â
Game Two
Â
In the second half of the doubleheader, it was the Lady Cougars that struck first getting two runs in each of the first two innings.
Â
McKenzie Fagioli doubled home Smith for the game's first run and Star added another run with a two-out single.
Â
In the second, a double steal allowed
Brittany Mitchell to come across for the third run of the game and Waugh brought
Johanna Beyer home two batters later to make it 4-0.
Â
Pfeiffer (9-1) used a pair of three-run innings to steal the game away though. The Falcons got three in the third and three more in the fifth.
Â
The Lady Cougars put the tying runs on base in the seventh, but a pair of pop outs ended the contest.
Â
Helen Snavely (0-1) suffered her first loss in a six-inning complete game effort. The freshman allowed five earned runs on 10 hits.
Â
Star led CSU at the plate with a 3-for-4 showing, while Fagioli and
Elizabeth Perdue were each 2-for-4.
