COLUMBUS – The Columbus State University women's basketball team dropped a 71-58 contest to Flagler on Wednesday evening. The Peach Belt Conference game was played in the Lumpkin Center.
Â
Tatiana Wayne led all scorers with 19 points, while
Machala Raymonville added 17.
Â
"We didn't come out with any energy or intensity tonight," head coach
Anita Howard said. "We have to put this one behind us because we know we have a good Clayton State team waiting for us on Saturday."
Â
Columbus State (9-7, 7-5 PBC) fell behind right off the bat, giving up a basket on the opening possession and then turning it over on the inbounds to find itself down 4-0 just 20 seconds in.
Â
The Lady Cougars answered back with four straight to tie the game, but Flagler (12-4, 10-2) took the lead back and led the rest of the way. The Saints opened up an 11-point advantage late in the first quarter and led by nine after one.
Â
Raymonville brought the Lady Cougars back within six at 24-18 on a 3-pointer midway through the second. CSU then got a stop on the defensive end, but threw the ball away and Flagler knocked down a 3 to stop the momentum.
Â
FC pushed the lead back to double digits on the next possession and led by at least 10 for the remainder of the game.
Â
CSU shot just 33.3 percent (23-for-69) on the night and made 3-of-10 3-point attempts.
Â
Columbus State will head on the road Saturday for its first meeting with Clayton State. Tipoff is scheduled for 1:30 p.m. in Morrow.
