COLUMBUS – Wrapping up its first home tournament of the season, the Columbus State University softball team picked up a split of Sunday's pair of games. The tournament was played at Cougar Field.
Â
Columbus State (5-5) lost 4-1 to Wingate before a five-inning 10-0 victory against Tuskegee.
Â
The Lady Cougars will head on the road Friday and Saturday for the Citrus Classic at the ESPN Wide World of Sports.
Â
Game One
Â
After a pair of scoreless frames, Wingate broke through with a two-run double to open the scoring in the top of the third.
Â
The Lady Cougars got one of the runs right back with one swing as
JoJo Beyer launched a long home run to left field, her second long ball of the season.
Â
The scoring would stop there though for the Lady Cougars. Wingate would later get two more on a home run in the fifth to add to the lead.
Â
Elizabeth Perdue had the only multi-hit showing in the opener, going 2-for-3 at the plate.
Â
Darby Demarest (2-2) went the distance in the circle, allowing four runs on five hits with six strikeouts.
Â
Game Two
Â
The Lady Cougars were held scoreless in the first, but it was the only inning they didn't score in.
Â
Calli Star tucked a solo home run inside the left field foul pole in the second to get the offense started, and
Keeli Waugh later singled home Beyer to make it a 2-0 game.
Â
In the third, Perdue got in on the act with a three-run missile over the left-centerfield wall to stretch the lead to five.
Â
Perdue wasn't done though. The junior stepped up with the bases loaded in the following inning and promptly unloaded them with a grand slam.
Â
Just for good measure, Star cranked out her second homer of the game to go back-to-back and finish off the scoring for CSU.
Â
Perdue was 2-for-3 in game two as well, driving in seven runs. All nine Lady Cougar starters had at least one hit in the game.
Â
Harley Dawson (1-2) allowed just one hit over four shutout innings for the victory.
Helen Snavely closed it out with a scoreless fifth.
