SAINT AUGUSTINE, Fla. – The Columbus State University women's basketball team kept on rolling on Wednesday night, winning 60-54 at Flagler. The Peach Belt Conference contest was played in Saint Augustine, Fla.
Four Lady Cougars finished the night in double figures, led by 14 points from
Tatiana Wayne.
Machala Raymonville added 13 points and nine rebounds.
Jasmine Herndon and
Tatum Jarvis chipped in 12 and 11 points, respectively.
"Well, it wasn't pretty, but we're happy to grind out a tough win on the road," head coach
Anita Howard said. "We didn't have our best offense tonight, but the defense worked hard and made it tough on Flagler all night."
A four-point play from Raymonville tied the game up at 15 apiece after the opening quarter of action before the Lady Cougars turned in their best basketball of the night.
With the game tied at 19, Columbus State (17-8, 15-6 PBC) got back-to-back 3-pointers from Jarvis and Wayne to open up its biggest lead of the night and jumpstart a strong close to the first half.
Wayne and Jarvis scored six straight again later in the quarter to stretch the lead out to 37-24 at halftime.
The third quarter was a completely different story, however. CSU didn't score its first points until a pair of free throws from
Jillah Moede six minutes in, and those would be the only points the Lady Cougars would score in the quarter.
Flagler (17-8, 15-6) outscored CSU 16-2 in the third period and led 40-39 heading to the fourth.
The lead changed hands five times in the first four minutes of the final quarter with Herndon giving Columbus State a 45-44 edge.
Chrisalyn Boston scored to add to the lead and the Lady Cougars led by as much as seven down the stretch.
CSU took care of business at the foul line to close out the victory, knocking down 6-of-8 from the stripe in the final minute.
The Lady Cougars shot just 32.4 percent (22-for-68) on the night, but forced 21 turnovers and crushed the Saints 48-33 on the glass.
Columbus State will wrap up the regular season against Clayton State on Saturday. Tipoff is scheduled for 1:30 p.m. inside the Lumpkin Center.
