ORLANDO, Fla. – Wrapping up its weekend in the Sunshine State, the Columbus State University softball team split its pair of games at the Citrus Classic on Saturday.
Â
Columbus State (8-6) fell 2-1 in the opening game against Wheeling Jesuit, but bounced back for a 5-4 victory over Dominican to cap off the day.
Â
"Overall, I'm happy with how we've played on this trip," head coach
Brad Huskisson said. "We ran into a really good pitcher in the first game, but I thought we've swung the bats well and gotten good work out of our pitchers."
Â
The Lady Cougars return home now and will host the 2018 CSU Classic beginning on Friday at Cougar Field.
Â
Game One
Â
Wheeling Jesuit got the scoring started on Saturday, plating a run in the top of the first inning.
Â
The lead wouldn't last long however, as the Lady Cougars got the run right back.
Keeli Waugh singled to start the bottom half of the inning and eventually came around to score on a throwing error.
Â
Both teams went quietly over the next two innings before the Cardinals jumped back in front with a run in the fourth.
Â
The Lady Cougars had just one baserunner over the final four innings, getting a single from
Elizabeth Perdue, but nothing else and dropped its first of the day.
Â
Helen Snavely (0-1) worked 3.1 innings in the circle for the Lady Cougars, allowing the two runs.
Â
Game Two
Â
It was the Lady Cougars that found the scoreboard first in the second game of the day. Perdue got the scoring started in the third inning with a RBI single and
Calli Star followed with a sacrifice fly to make it 2-0.
Â
However, Dominican responded with a two-spot of its own in the bottom of the frame to knot the game back up.
Â
In the fourth,
Kirstin Reynolds and
Kristin Studds each had hits to start the inning and Waugh put Columbus State back on top with her second home run of the season.
Â
The Chargers got two more runs in the fifth, but
Darby Demarest took care of the rest to seal the win.
Â
Demarest (4-2) gave up just two runs in 6.2 innings, recording eight strikeouts.
Â
Perdue was 3-for-4 at the plate as part of a nine-hit Lady Cougar attack.
