DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. – The Columbus State University softball team lost a pair of games on Wednesday at Embry-Riddle. The nonconference doubleheader was played in Daytona Beach, Fla.
Â
Columbus State (15-14) took an 11-0 loss in the opener before a 4-3 loss in the finale.
Â
The Lady Cougars return home this weekend for Peach Belt Conference doubleheaders against Lander and USC Aiken. First pitch Saturday against Lander is scheduled for 4 p.m.
Â
Game One
Â
Wednesday got off to an ominous start as Embry-Riddle scored eight runs in the bottom of the first inning.
Â
The Eagles added a run in the second and two more in the third to provide more than enough offense.
Â
Keeli Waugh had the lone hit of the game for the Lady Cougars, singling to left in the third, but CSU couldn't break through in the run column.
Â
Game Two
Â
It didn't take long for the Lady Cougars to get on the board in Wednesday's second game, putting a run up in the top of the first.
Â
McKenzie Fagioli singled with two away and moved to second on an error.
Calli Star then singled her home to give CSU the early edge.
Â
Embry-Riddle responded with a run of its own in the bottom of the first inning and then moved in front behind two more runs in the third.
Â
Down two,
Kia Smith cut the deficit in half with a sacrifice fly in the fifth. Fagiloli then tied the game up with a run-scoring double.
Â
The game wouldn't stay tied for long however, as ERAU hit a solo home run in the bottom half of the inning in what would prove to be the difference in the game.
Â
Fagioli's two hits led the Lady Cougar offense in the second half of the doubleheader.
