ST. AUGUSTINE, Fla. – The Columbus State University softball team added another doubleheader sweep to its ledger with a pair of wins Saturday at Flagler. The Peach Belt Conference games were played in St. Augustine, Fla.
Â
Columbus State (23-14, 9-3 PBC) won the opening game 4-2 before a dominant 6-0 showing in game two. The Lady Cougars have now won eight straight games.
Â
"We were good in all three facets today," head coach
Brad Huskisson said. "We pitched it well in both games and came up with some big hits when we needed them."
Â
Columbus State is back at home on Wednesday for a doubleheader against Point University. First pitch is scheduled for 4 p.m. at Cougar Field.
Â
Game One
Â
The opening game was dominated by the pitchers, with neither team able to score a run through the first three innings.
Â
That all changed with one swing of the bat in the fourth though, as
McKenzie Fagioli hit her first home run of the season to give the Lady Cougars the lead.
Â
Flagler matched the run with one of its own in the bottom half of the inning, but CSU had the answer.
Keeli Waugh singled home
Lee Anne Rees in the fifth to push CSU back in front.
Â
Again though, it was another answer from the Saints in the bottom half of the frame tying the game at two.
Â
In the sixth, Rees drew a bases loaded walk to bring
Elizabeth Perdue across the plate for what would turn out to be the game-winning run.
Mary Horne followed with a single to add a little insurance.
Â
Darby Demarest (10-7) took care of the rest for the Lady Cougars, going the distance in the circle. The junior allowed just one earned run and struck out eight.
Â
Game Two
Â
Saturday's second game belonged to the Lady Cougars from the start.
Keeli Waugh and
Kia Smith each drew walks and Perdue made it a 3-0 contest with her eighth long ball of the season.
Â
The three runs held as the only scoring in the game until the sixth, when CSU added three more.
Â
Smith pushed a run to the plate with a RBI single that was followed by a sacrifice fly by Fagioli. Perdue capped off a strong game with a RBI knock of her own.
Â
Peyton Sorrells (10-3) was excellent in the circle, shutting Flagler out for six innings with just four hits.
Helen Snavely struck out a pair in a perfect seventh inning to finish the game.
Â
Calli Star was 3-for-4 on the game, while Perdue went 2-for-4 with four RBIs.
