COLUMBUS – The Columbus State University softball team split a pair of games Sunday to wrap up the 2018 CSU Classic. The three-day tournament was played at Cougar Field.
Â
Columbus State (12-7) took its lone loss of the weekend 6-3 against Barry to start the day before bouncing back with a 9-1 win over Bloomfield.
Â
"I'm pleased with the way we played this weekend," head coach
Brad Huskisson said. "We would've liked to have been 5-0, but we'll take 4-1. I thought we hit the ball well up and down our lineup and got great work out of our pitchers."
Â
The Lady Cougars will begin Peach Belt Conference play on Friday with a doubleheader at Georgia Southwestern. First pitch is scheduled for 4 p.m. in Americus.
Â
Game One
Â
CSU jumped on the board first against Barry behind three consecutive one-out singles.
Calli Star started with a line drive to centerfield and
Kirstin Reynolds followed suit with one to left.
JoJo Beyer then put the Lady Cougars in front with a run-scoring knock to left.
Â
The game held at 1-0 through four innings as
Helen Snavely allowed just two hits in four scoreless frames.
Darby Demarest entered to start the fifth and gave up a single and two walks before Snavely came back into the circle. CSU forced a pair of runners out at the plate and was on the verge of getting out of the inning, but a two-out double scored three runs and pushed Barry into the lead.
Â
Another double sent another run across the plate for the Bucs and put the Lady Cougars in a 4-1 hole.
Â
CSU answered right back though, as
Keeli Waugh launched a two-run homer to bring the deficit down to just one. However, Barry matched it with a two-run shot of its own in the seventh.
Â
The Lady Cougars got the tying run to the plate with two outs in the seventh, but a groundout ended the contest.
Â
Star and Waugh each had a pair of hits for the Lady Cougars.
Â
Game Two
Â
The bats got rolling in game two as CSU pounded out 13 hits in just four innings at the plate.
Â
Beyer started the scoring in the second with an opposite-field home run.
McKenzie Fagioli then singled through the right side with the bases loaded to score a run and
Elizabeth Perdue followed with a two-run single through the middle.
Â
In the fourth, Fagioli picked up another RBI knock to right and Star sent her third home run of the year over the wall to give the Lady Cougars the eight-run lead necessary for the mercy rule.
Â
The top four in the CSU order combined to go 9-for-12 at the plate, led by Fagioli's 3-for-3 night.
Â
Harley Dawson (2-2) went the distance in the circle for the Lady Cougars, allowing just an unearned run in five innings.
