PEMBROKE, N.C. - It was a dominating performance from start to finish for the Columbus State University women's basketball team Saturday afternoon as they took down UNC Pembroke 74-50.
First quarters have been a struggle for the Lady Cougars as of late but it was a completely different story today as CSU forced UNC Pembroke to shoot just 1-15 from the field to start. Tatiana Wayne, who led all scorers with 13 points, hit three three-pointers in the opening ten minutes helping Columbus State to jump out to the early 11-point advantage.
"Last game we talked about needing to have grit and intensity and it felt great to see the effort from our ladies early on today," said Coach Anita Howard. "We preach defense first here at CSU which in turn will lead to our offense and we saw exactly that, especially in the first half, as we held them to just three made field goals."
The defense was strong as Columbus State employed a zone that caused the Braves fits all game. After UNC Pembroke made their first field goal with 7:37 left in the first quarter, the Lady Cougars swarming defense proceeded to hold them without a field goal for the next 11 minutes and 32 seconds of action.Â
Back to back three-pointers by Tatum Jarvis followed by a three-point play from Anna Stewart saw the Lady Cougars break open the game, taking a 19-point lead with 3:33 left in the first half. Columbus State extended it to 21 at the halftime break as the Braves finished the first half shooting just 3-26 from the field.Â
12 different Lady Cougars got in on the scoring action this afternoon as the depth of CSU showed once again. The bench finished with 45 points led by LeeAysia Williamson who had 14 and Aryan Dozier who added in nine.Â
Relentless all game, the defense of Columbus State forced UNC Pembroke to shoot just 12-of-56 from the field for 21% and 19% from behind the arc. Both of those were season bests for the Lady Cougar defense.
As a team CSU shot 29.6 percent (21-for-71) from the floor and 24 percent (7-for-27) from three.
Columbus State will remain on the road to take on Francis Marion this upcoming Monday. Tipoff is scheduled for 1:30 pm.Â
