MILLEDGEVILLE, Ga. - The Columbus State University women's basketball team lost a Peach Belt Conference road matchup against Georgia College 71-58 Wednesday night.
Sophomore LeeAysia Williamson led the Lady Cougars with 20 points and seven rebounds while Naomi Holloway chipped in another 14 points and five rebounds. Khari Jernigan rounded out the double digit scorers with 10 points, a season high for the junior.
"We battled hard tonight despite the numerous injuries we are currently dealing with," said head coach Anita Howard. "It was encouraging to see our girls fight to get the lead back right before the fourth quarter but we couldn't quite finish down the stretch when we needed it most."
Despite being down for most of the game, Columbus State fought back hard in the third quarter. Holloway hit a three-pointer with just under three minutes remaining to finally put CSU back in front at 41-40. After the Lady Cougars went back up with one minute remaining in the quarter the Bobcats went on a 5-0 run to reclaim the lead heading into the fourth.
Columbus State ran out of gas in the fourth as Georgia College opened the game up midway through the fourth courtesy of a 12-2 run. The Bobcats controlled the glass finishing with 48 rebounds and their defense forced CSU into tough shots down the stretch.
The Lady Cougars started 50-percent from behind the arc in the first half, going 7-14 as a team through two quarters. Unfortunately the tide turned from their hot start as they finished just 2-15 from deep in the second half.
Usually a strength for this team, CSU had their lowest output from their bench this season scoring just nine points. The Lady Cougars also forced their lowest amount of turnovers this season as Georgia College turned it over just 15 times.
As a team CSU shot 27.3 percent (18-for-66) from the floor and 31 percent (9-for-29) from three.
Columbus State will head home to the Lumpkin Center to take on Young Harris this Saturday. Tipoff is scheduled for 1:30 pm.
