COLUMBUS - The Columbus State University softball team split its two games of the Cougar Classic Saturday, falling 4-1 to Embry-Riddle before bouncing back in historic manner taking down Union 8-0. The tournament took place at Cougar Field in Columbus.
"Obviously it would have been better if we won both games but we saw positive signs in the second game," said head coach
Brad Huskisson. "Peyton (Sorrells) was outstanding for us in game two and I couldn't be prouder of her accomplishment tonight."
The Lady Cougars will play their final game of the tournament tomorrow with the first pitch scheduled for 3 p.m. against Union.
Game One
Embry-Riddle (6-5) quickly got on the board in the first after
Darby Demarest hit a batter to push across the first run of the game. The Eagles would follow it up in the third with a single to right field to bring home another run, making it 2-0 after three innings.
Columbus State would fight back earning their lone run of the game in the fifth after
Madisyn Brown led off with a bunt single. Brown stole second and advanced to third after a single from
Chandler DesRochers.
Paris Poston would pick up her first collegiate RBI sending a sacrifice fly to left field allowing Brown to cross home plate.
The Eagles would tack on an insurance run in the sixth inning after Demarest walked home a batter with the bases loaded.
CSU had a chance to pull off the heroics in the bottom of the seventh after getting walks from
Maddie Dodson and
Kirstin Reynolds. With two outs, power hitting
Elizabeth Perdue represented the tying-run at the plate for the Lady Cougars, but a ground out to the shortstop would end the threat giving the Eagles the 4-1 victory.
Demarest (1-2) was hit with the loss allowing four runs (three earned) on four hits while throwing a complete game.
Game Two
CSU bounced back in historic fashion in its final game of the night with pitcher
Peyton Sorrells throwing the fourth perfect game in Columbus State program history.
The senior sent all 15 batters she faced back to the dugout while picking up five strikeouts in the 8-0 win over Union.
Sorrells (1-1) got her night started on the right foot striking out two of the first three batters she faced in the opening inning. In the second inning, her defense came to the rescue with freshman
Morgan Elston making a diving grab down the right field line near the warning track. Sorrells picked up another strikeout to end the frame before the CSU offense turned up the heat.
Elston followed her defensive grab with a single to leadoff the bottom of the second with Dodson following with a triple to right field to give Columbus State the 1-0 lead. An error and a groundout scored two more runs for CSU. Poston then hit the second triple of the inning before scoring off a
Kirstin Reynolds single to open up a 4-0 lead.
As Sorrells continued the send batter after batter down, Columbus State dropped another four-spot in the bottom of the fifth to put a bow on the win.
Reynolds, Perdue and
Elyse Ambrose each hit singles to open up the inning adding another run to the Lady Cougar lead. After a hit by pitch and a walk, CSU was one run away from ending the game in the fifth.
Hannah Rose Corbin came in to pinch hit for Columbus State and promptly singled into right field to send the team into a celebration.
The perfect game from Sorrells was the first for the Lady Cougars since Jennifer Isasi did it back on March 8, 2008 against Charleston West Virginia.
