COLUMBUS – The Columbus State University softball team picked up a pair of wins against Miles College Wednesday. The nonconference doubleheader was played at Cougar Field.
Columbus State (4-5) downed the Golden Bears 5-1 in Wednesday's opener before an 11-3 victory.
Game One
The Lady Cougars used the long ball in the first game hitting three solo homers in the 5-1 victory. In the fourth, Madeline Parker and Hannah Rose Corbin both hit their first collegiate home runs while Maddie Dodson added her first of the season two innings later.
That would be plenty of run support for Darby Demarest as she turned in a great performance in the circle. The senior allowed just a solo homer while racking up 14 strikeouts. Demarest (2-2) has 45 strikeouts in 29.1 innings so far this year.
The other Lady Cougar runs came in the second after the first four hitters reached base. With the bases loaded, Dodson laced one right back up the middle scoring Elyse Ambrose. Parker immediately followed with a sac fly to center to put CSU up 2-0.
Dodson was 2-for-3 with two RBIs and Parker was 1-for-1 with the solo blast and a walk.
Game Two
Columbus State jumped out to a 3-0 lead after two innings. In the first, a fielding error by Miles helped extend the inning as the Lady Cougars put two on the board. With two outs and two on, a wild pitch allowed Corbin to score giving CSU an early lead. Elizabeth Perdue followed with a single to centerfield to bring Reynolds home.
After the Lady Cougars scored another run in the second, Miles tied the game thanks to three CSU errors in the top of the fourth. Back-to-back-errors began the inning before a sacrifice bunt moved both into scoring position.
In the next at bat, Peyton Sorrells (2-1) got a comebacker to the circle but her throw to home was wild allowing a runner to score. A groundout and a single down the left field line tied the game at three.
The game didn't stay that way for long as the Lady Cougars scored seven runs in their half of the inning to retake the lead. CSU quickly loaded the bases in the frame and Corbin chased them all home with a double to left center.
After the Lady Cougars reloaded the bases, a fielding error and a Perdue single made it a 10-3 game.
CSU earned the mercy rule victory as Dodson tripled to lead off the fifth and scored on a Chandler DesRochers single.
Sorrells earned the victory after allowing three unearned runs in the complete game effort. The senior struck out four batters, while allowing just two hits.
Perdue was 2-for-3 with two RBIs while DesRochers was 2-for-2. Corbin drove home three with her double in the fourth.
Columbus State will travel to Florida to compete in the Florida Tech Invitational this weekend. The Lady Cougars will play five games including a doubleheader Friday with the first coming against Palm Beach Atlantic. First pitch is scheduled for 4:00 p.m.
