AUGUSTA, Ga. - The Columbus State University softball team grabbed another road sweep this time taking down Augusta twice in the Sunday doubleheader. The Peach Belt Conference games took place at Jaguar Field.
Columbus State (23-10, 5-1 PBC) picked up a tight 2-0 shutout win in the opening game before winning 10-1 (5) in the second game.
"After the splits we've had at home it was a much better performance for us to make sure we took care of business against Augusta," said head coach Brad Huskisson. "Giving up only one run in two games on the road against a conference opponent was a great outcome for us and hopefully will prepare us for our big upcoming conference doubleheader against Flagler."
The Lady Cougars will travel to Montgomery, Ala. first to take on Auburn-Montgomery Wednesday in a non-conference game. First pitch is scheduled for 6:30 p.m.
Game One
Darby Demarest threw another gem inside the circle for the Lady Cougars in the opening game against the Jaguars. The senior started the game by striking out the first six batters she faced, cruising through the first two innings.
Demarest (9-4) would give up a bunt single in the bottom of the third, which turned out to be the only hit the senior would give up all game.
After the third inning, Demarest went three-up, three-down for the final four innings of the game, leaving Augusta unable to get anything going at the plate.
Columbus State got two runs in the third inning which was all they needed to come away with the win. Madeline Parker smacked a solo home run with one-out to put the Lady Cougars on the board before Hannah Rose Corbin knocked an RBI-single to make it 2-0.
It was Parker's third home run this season giving CSU 26 home runs now as a team through 33 games.
Parker finished 1-for-3 hitting the home run while Elyse Ambrose grabbed a double and a single going 2-for-3 in the opening game.
Demarest picked up her ninth win this season, throwing a one-hit shutout while striking out 10 to give her 158 strikeouts on the year.
Game Two
While the pitching led the way for CSU in the opening game, their bats came up with hit after hit in the second game to jump all over Augusta.
They opened up with a run in the first inning thanks for Ambrose singling down the left field line to make it 1-0.
It remained that way until the fourth inning when once again Parker came through with a big hit for Columbus State. The freshman lined a two-RBI single to right field and three batters later Corbin did the same to make it 5-0.
The Jaguars would run into all sorts of trouble in the fifth inning when they loaded the bases with only one out. Parker was hit by a pitch, scoring a run before CSU would groundout in a fielder's choice at the plate.
With two outs, the Lady Cougars then drew back-to-back walks to score two more runs before Morgan Elston would bring in another two on a single as CSU exploded out to the 10-1 lead.
Corbin (9-2) would get three more outs inside the circle to run-rule the Jaguars, ending the game after five innings. She finished the complete game giving up only three hits and one earned while striking out three. The freshman would also pick up three RBI's at the plate.
Elston would finish 2-for-4 with two RBI's while Ambrose grabbed two hits as well with two runs and one RBI.
Parker would finish off her strong performance on the day snagging three more RBI's and scoring twice in the final game.
