LIVINGSTON, Ala. - The Columbus State University softball team earned a road split against West Alabama Wednesday, grabbing the first game 6-3 before falling in the second 9-6.Â
"This was a tough road doubleheader for us as West Alabama is a quality non-conference opponent," said head coach Brad Huskisson. "Sorrells came in and helped us to a win but the pitching wasn't quite there in that second game. We've got to clean up some of the errors but we'll be ready to go this weekend as we get back to conference play."
Columbus State (26-12, 6-2 PBC) will jump back into conference play with a doubleheader against Young Harris on Saturday, April 6. First pitch is scheduled for 1:00 p.m.
Game One
The Lady Cougars jumped all over West Alabama in the opening game behind a five-spot in the top of the second. CSU started with back-to-back hits from Kirstin Reynolds and Elizabeth Perdue to put runners on second and third with no outs.Â
Paris Poston would pick up the sac-fly RBI and a single from Madeline Parker quickly made it 2-0. But the Lady Cougars weren't done. Chandler DesRochers hit an RBI-single and Morgan Elston capped off the big inning with a two-RBI double into left field.
All nine batters saw the plate in the five-run second inning.Â
But West Alabama would immediately respond, scoring twice in the bottom of the frame after three walks and a double made it 5-2. CSU brought Peyton Sorrells into the circle and the senior helped guide the Lady Cougars the rest of the way.Â
Sorrells (5-3) retired the first four batters she saw and gave up just one run in 5.2 innings pitched for Columbus State.Â
The Lady Cougars would tack on a run in the top of the fifth when Elyse Ambrose hit a two-out solo home run, her fourth of the season.Â
Elston went 2-for-4 in the opening game with two doubles and two RBI's. DesRochers also picked up two hits with a run and an RBI for CSU.Â
Game Two
Columbus State once again struck first, this time scoring in the opening inning thanks to a Reynolds RBI-single.Â
They would add a second run the following inning on a sac-fly and then it was Reynolds again, this time hitting a home run to left field in the top of the third. The two-run home run put the Lady Cougars on top 4-1 heading to the bottom of the third.Â
But that's where the fielding and pitching began to run into trouble for CSU.Â
An error put the lead runner on for West Alabama and a single with an outfield error would make it 4-3. The Tigers would pick up two more singles and two more runs in the inning, quickly taking the lead at 5-4.
They'd strike again in the bottom of the fifth when they hit five singles, including four in a row to plate four more runs making it a 9-5 game.Â
The Lady Cougars though would fight back one final time in the seventh.Â
Ambrose led the inning off with another home run, her third one in as many games. A double from Reynolds and a walk by Poston would put two on with one out as Parker hit an RBI-groundout to cut the lead down to three. But a fielder's choice would put an end to the final threat closing out the doubleheader.Â
Reynolds went 3-for-4 in the second game with three RBI's and two runs. Ambrose collected three hits as well scoring twice.Â
Hannah Rose Corbin (9-4) picked up the loss going 2.1 innings giving up four runs off of four hits.
