MORROW, Ga. - In dominating fashion, the Columbus State University cross country teams swept both the team and individual titles at the 2019 Clayton State Cross Country Challenge on Friday evening. The meet was held at Mount Zion Baptist Church in Morrow, Ga.
The Lady Cougars placed the first five finishers in the meet to earn the perfect 15-point team score to best eight other schools.
Alli Hay continued her perfect season earning her second victory in as many meets. Hay completed the 5k course in 19:09.26 which was over 22 seconds better than any runner in the meet.
Tanzanie Brown was the only other competitor on Friday to run the course in under 20 minutes. Brown grabbed second place with a time of 19:32.89.
Macey Voorhies (20:22.34, third),
Cynthia Lopez-Jordan (20:23.89, fourth), and
Brianna Sattinger (20:27.07, fifth) all had nearly identical times as they all collected top-five finishes.Â
Eva Salazar Torres also finished in the top-10 for Columbus State as she crossed the line in eighth place with a time of 21:36.53.
Hannah Hutchens (23:14.99, 17
th) and
Emily Rowlett (33:57.10, 46
th) also ran in the meet.
On the men's side, Columbus State had the top-six runners on Friday to capture the title over three other teams.
Charles Asouzu grabbed his second individual medalist honors of the year in the 8k race. The senior ran the course in 27:28.21 to finish a few seconds in front of his teammates.
Noah Churchwell (27:34.66, second) and
John Scarborough (27:38.73, third) each posted season-best 8k times to keep pace with Asouzu.
Matthew Moulton (27:57.28, fourth) and
Wright Calhoun (28:02.94, fifth) were the final two team scorers for the Cougars on Friday. Two other Cougars collected top-10 finishes with
Carl Corley (28:50.30) and
Kaden Ellis (29:29.13) finishing sixth and ninth, respectively.Â
Also running for the Cougars on Friday were
Tristan Breen (29:51.52, 12
th),
Devin Salazar (32:54.41, 19
th), and
Austin Anthony (33:17.82, 21
st).
Columbus State will look to carry the momentum into next week's JSU Foothills Invitational hosted by Division I Jacksonville State University. The meet will be held in Oxford, Ala. on Saturday, Oct. 5.Â
