Lady Cougars Travel to Georgia College

CSU is 15-3 against GC since the 2011-12 season.

COLUMBUS - Fresh off an impressive victory, the Columbus State University women's basketball team will look to carry the momentum on the road against Georgia College on Wednesday, Jan. 8. The Peach Belt Conference is scheduled to begin at 5:30 p.m. in Milledgeville, Ga.

The Lady Cougars (7-2, 2-1 PBC) rung in the new year with a 74-51 win over Francis Marion last Saturday in Columbus. CSU had a strong third quarter outscoring the Patriots 20-8 en route to its 23-point victory. 

Kaihla Carter had a career night posting a double-double with 12 points and 12 rebounds. Both were career-highs while she added five assists and four steals. LeeAysia Williamson also had a memorial day scoring her 1,000-career point between CSU and NAIA St. Andrews with her 20-point performance. Eboni Williams was in double-figures as well with 16 points.

"I don't think you could ask for a better result in the first game back from the holidays," commented head coach Matt Houser. "We played great defensively and got out in transition for some easy points."

"It's never easy going on the road in the Peach Belt. Georgia College knows how to win and we need to play our best ball to grab a win in that environment."

About Georgia College

Georgia College (4-8, 1-3) will look to shake off back-to-back conference losses after falling 70-57 at home against USC Aiken on Saturday. The Bobcats couldn't overcome a slow start by getting outscored 18-6 in the first quarter. GC showed signs of rust posting a 28.2 percent (20-for-71) mark from the floor.

Sophomore Harper Vick is the go-to scorer for the Bobcats averaging 12.3 points per game. However, she is the only player averaging double-figures in points this season. In the post, La'Shandria Mallard is one of the best rebounders in the conference bringing in 8.6 rebounds per game.

Georgia College has struggled to get its offense going so far this season ranking near the bottom in the Peach Belt in most offensive categories. The Bobcats average 53.4 points per game while shooting 31.5 percent overall, both league lows. 

Lady Cougar Notes

• Columbus State currently has seven players averaging more than six points per game, including four who score more than eight per game.

• The Lady Cougars knocked down eight threes while shooting 34.8 percent from beyond the arc in Saturday's win over Francis Marion. CSU has shot over 34 percent from three in five games this season. 

• Overall this season, Columbus State leads the PBC in 3-point shooting (34.1 percent). Valeria Merlos (41.0 percent) and Williamson (40.9 percent) rank one and two individually in 3-point shooting percentage. 

• By tying their season-high in steals with 16 against FMU last time out, the Lady Cougars have swiped 10 or more steals every game this season. 

• At the Division II level, Columbus State ranks 10th in steals per game (13.4) and 22nd in turnovers forced per game (22.7). Williamson is 24th individually in 3-point field goal per game (3.0)

• CSU leads the PBC in made field goals per game (29.2), 3-point field goal percentage (34.1), offensive rebounds per game (15.7), and rebounds per game (44.2).

• Williamson continues to pace the PBC in scoring averaging 18.1 points per game. She has five 20-point performances this season, including in back-to-back outings.

• In Columbus State's seven wins this season, its average margin of victory is 20.4 points. 

Series History 

• One of Columbus State's oldest rival, Wednesday's meeting will be the 67th all-time between the Lady Cougars and the Bobcats. The 67 meetings are the most against any opponent for CSU.

• The Lady Cougars lead the series 38-28 and are 15-3 against GC since the 2011-12 season. 

• The Bobcats hold a 20-12 advantage in Milledgeville, including winning last season's meeting 71-58.
