COLUMBUS - The Columbus State University softball team scored six runs in the first and never looked back defeating Albany State 9-1 in five innings Friday afternoon. The game was part of the 2020 Cougar Classic.
After Albany State (0-6) plated a run in the first, the Cougars roared back. The first six batters reached with
Katelyn Cooper getting it all started with an infield single.
Morgan Elston followed with an infield single of her own before
Elyse Ambrose reached first on a dropped third strike. The wild pitch also allowed Cooper to score to tie the game.
With the bases loaded,
Paige Vincent ripped a single to left field to score Ambrose and Elston putting the Cougars ahead 3-1.
Paris Poston continued the hitting parade with an RBI single before two more wild pitches made it 6-1 CSU.

Harley Dawson would settle in nicely after allowing the first-inning run. She retired the side in order in the third while working around baserunners in the second and fourth.
Lexy Head tossed a perfect fifth in relief.
"It's always nice to get some early runs on the board," commented head coach
Brad Huskisson. "We are starting to play better in all ascpets of the game. Tomorrow, we need to come out swinging and get an early lead."
Dawson (3-2) picked up her third win allowing one run on four hits. She punched out one.
Vincent had a very productive day, scoring twice while driving in two with a perfect 3-for-3 day at the plate. Cooper (1-for-2, run RBI), Elston (1-for-3, run), Poston (1-for-2, RBI) all had hits in the game.

Columbus State will continue hosting the 2020 Cougar Classic with five games on Saturday beginning at 10 a.m. The Cougars will play the nightcap against Union at 7 p.m.
