No. 5 Women's Tennis Secures First Win of Season

CSU swept AUM on Sunday 7-0.

MONTGOMERY, Ala. - The No. 5 Columbus State University women's tennis team bounced back from a season-opening loss in impressive style on Sunday as the Lady Cougars swept Auburn University Montgomery 7-0. The match took place at the AUM Tennis Complex.

After falling 5-2 on Saturday to No 21 West Alabama, the Lady Cougars quickly took full control over the Warhawks in doubles play. Luise Sachs and Amanda Citre recorded the first win of the afternoon at the second spot. The duo took care of busiess in a 6-3 decision. At first doubles, Beatriz Lopez and Sara Ramirez Goncalves were 6-4 winners over Sofia Navarro and Maria Casas. AUM (0-2) did take third doubles as Sofia Mustre and Julia Enderink edged Valentina Abrile and Agostina Bigotti 7-5. 

Columbus State (1-1) stretched its lead to 3-0 following wins at fifth and third singles. Bigootti won a tightly contested first set 7-5, but was in full control of the second to defeat Mustre 7-5, 6-0. Abrile made quick work of her opponent at the third position taking the match 6-4, 6-2. 

The Lady Cougars had three more straight-set victories on Sunday. Ramirez Goncalves won fourth singles 6-4, 6-3, while Lopez picked up another win at the top spot. The senior knocked off Navarro 6-3, 7-5 in the marquee match. At sixth singles, Citre punched in a 7-6, 6-4 win against Enderink.

Sachs had to work the hardest to win on Sunday. After dropping the first set 6-2 at second singles, Sachs won the next 6-3 to head into the decisive third set. In a classic, the Lady Cougar walked off victorious with the 2-6, 6-3, 7-6 victory.

Columbus State will prepare to go to Oklahoma City to compete in the 2021 ITA National Indoor Championships.
