COLUMBUS - The Columbus State University softball team swept Miles College on Wednesday in a non-conference doubleheader in Pleasant Grove, Ala.
The Cougars scored 32 runs Wednesday afternoon and pounded out 30 hits in the two wins. CSU exploded for 22 runs in game one in a 22-2 five-inning victory and followed it up with a 10-0 six-inning in the nightcap.
GAME 1 (CSU 22-2, 5 innings)
Everything went right for Columbus State in game one with every starter collecting an RBI. Hannah Rose Corbin led the way for the Cougars at the plate, going 3-for-4 with two homers, including a grand slam in the top of the fifth. The third-year sophomore leadoff the game with a solo blast on the third pitch she saw.
Caitlyn Canady, Elyse Ambrose, Kirstin Reynolds and Lindsey Patton collected two hits each. Ambrose hit a two-run bomb and added a double to go along with her three RBIs. Reynolds and Morgan Elston had similar lines, with both right-handed batters driving in three and tallying doubles.
Harley Dawson (3-1) got her third win of the season on the mound, striking out two while allowing two runs.
The Cougars had a season-high 17 hits.
GAME 2 (CSU 10-0, 6 innings)
The solid CSU offense continued in game two as the Cougars scored 10 runs off of 13 hits. Katelyn Cooper was the threat in the lineup as the second-year freshman went 4-for-4 with four RBIs, including a double and a triple.
Canady, Elston and Maddie Dodson each added two hits and an RBI apiece for Columbus State, including a homer from Elston in the top of the sixth. Corbin also added another solo shot, her third of the day and fifth of the season, putting her first in home runs in the Peach Belt Conference this year.
Riley Patton (3-1) was close to a no-hitter as the junior transfer only allowed one hit. It was her third win of the season.
The Cougars will return to Columbus, Ga. for a doubleheader against Shorter University on Saturday, Feb. 27 starting at 1 p.m. Fans will be permitted to attend; however, COVID-19 health and safety protocols must be followed.
