COLUMBUS - The Columbus State University softball team swept Tuskegee University in their 2021 season opener, 8-2 (Game 1) and 10-0 (Game 2, 5 innings).
Game 1
Hannah Rose Corbin took the start on the mound for Columbus State and got the win. Senior Harley Dawson closed the game for the Cougars.
The Cougars came out strong offensively in the bottom of the first inning scoring five runs thanks to a two-run single from freshman Paige Vincent and a three-run home run from freshman Laura Harris. The Golden Tigers responded with two runs in the top of the second, being their only runs of the game.
CSU opened the bottom of the second inning with a double from sophomore Hannah Rose Corbin and a single from Morgan Elston. Elyse Ambrose then ripped a double to score Corbin and Elston, making it a 7-2 ballgame.
The last scoring inning for the game came in the bottom of the third before the Cougars held on for the 8-2 win.
Game 2
Columbus State stayed hot opening game two with seven runs in the bottom of the first inning. Corbin led off the inning with a solo home run, giving CSU a 1-0 lead. Freshman Caitlyn Canady walked and stole twice, putting her on third base. Elston delivered again with an RBI-single, scoring Canady. A walk from Ambrose and a hit-by-pitch from sophomore Madeline Parker loaded the bases. Harris hit a single scoring Elston before CSU scored five more runs from three walks.
Three more runs came in the bottom of the third courtesy of a three-run homer from Elston, scoring Corbin who reached base on a hit-by-pitch and Canady who singled.
Junior transfer Riley Patton made her Cougar debut a good one striking out seven through four innings of work.
CSU will travel to Montgomery, Ala. Friday, Feb. 12 for a one-day tournament, playing Auburn University Montgomery at noon and Spring Hill College at 2:15 p.m.
