Softball Falls to Montevallo

The Cougars lost a pair of games to the University of Montevallo Wednesday night.

MONTEVALLO, Ala. - The Columbus State University softball team lost a pair of games to the University of Montevallo on Wednesday night. The Falcons won 6-5 and 8-2 in the doubleheader sweep, improving their record to 8-9 as the Cougars fall to 10-6.

GAME 1

The Cougars fell to the Falcons in a close 6-5 game in Montevallo, with Hannah Rose Corbin getting her third loss on the mound this season after relieving Harley Dawson in the fifth inning. 

The Falcons struck first in the bottom of the third when Kinley Adams scored off of a bases-loaded fielder's choice. 

Columbus State scored two runs in the top of the fourth, thanks to a Paige Vincent single up the middle that scored Morgan ElstonKirstin Reynolds delivered an RBI pop fly to score Lindsey Patton for the second run of the inning.

Montevallo responded in the next half-inning when Adams delivered an RBI single to left field, making it a tie ballgame. The Falcons kept their momentum going in the bottom of the fifth as Holly Laforce Henderson ripped a 3-run home run over the left field fence, putting UM ahead 5-3. 

The Cougars fought back and tied the game in the top of the sixth with back-to-back home runs from Corbin (2-run HR) and Caitlyn Canady. However, the Falcons added another run in the bottom of the inning to grab the 6-5 win.

GAME 2

It was all Montevallo in the second game as the Falcons beat the Cougars 8-2. Riley Patton took her second loss of the season, making her record 3-2 in the circle.

The lone runs for Columbus State came from an Elyse Ambrose solo homer in the top of the second inning, giving CSU the 1-0 lead. UM responded in the bottom of the inning with five runs off of two home runs, moving the hosts in front 5-1.

Both teams were scoreless in the third, but Canady got things going again in the top of the fourth when she collected an RBI single up the middle, scoring Emily Holmes

Montevallo increased their lead to six in the bottom of the fourth when Brooke Ingram hit an RBI single to right field and Mariel Bertossi cranked a 2-run homer to center field that made the final score 8-2.

The Cougars will be back in action Saturday, March 13 as the team heads to Young Harris, Ga. for their first Peach Belt Conference doubleheader of the season. The first pitch is at 2 p.m.
