Corbin Ties Program Strikeout Record As Cougars Sweep West Georgia

The sophomore tied the record for most strikeouts in a game with 19.

COLUMBUS - The Columbus State University softball team got a record performance from Hannah Rose Corbin in the circle as the Cougars swept the University of West Georgia in a non-conference doubleheader at Cougar Field on Wednesday.

Corbin tied a CSU record with 19 strikeouts in the opener in a 4-0 shutout before coming on in the nightcap to punch out five more to save a 5-2 Cougar victory. The sophomore became the first Columbus State pitcher to reach the 19 strikeout mark in a non-extra inning game as Darby Demarest set the record in an 8-inning contest against Limestone College on Feb. 9, 2019.

GAME 1: CSU 4-0

Corbin began the game with two strikeouts in the top of the first before doing some damage with her bat. After Caitlyn Canady reached base to begin the frame, Corbin launched a two-run homer to centerfield to give the Cougars an early lead.

One of UWG's (13-6) best scoring chances came in the second as the Wolves put two runners on against the flamethrower. However, Corbin got out of the jam with another strikeout. In the third, the sophomore struck out the side in order to retire seven in a row via a strikeout.

Three more hitters did a u-turn at the plate in the fourth, but West Georgia still had a chance to push across runs in the inning. Two singles and a walk loaded the bases, but Corbin sat down the final hitter of the inning on four pitches.

Columbus State (14-6) was already up 3-0 when it added an extra insurance run in the fifth. Katelyn Cooper and Corbin both reached on one-out singles before an error on a Morgan Elston grounder loaded the bases for Lindsey Patton. Patton rolled a grounder just out of the reach of the pitcher for an infield hit to make it 4-0.

West Georgia had one final chance against Corbin in the sixth. A leadoff double and infield single put the Wolves in business for the middle of the order. Corbin settled down though, striking out the next three hitters she faced to keep the shutout alive. In the seventh, she was able to tie the program record after punching out three pinch-hitters to retire the final nine batters she faced with a K.

Corbin (6-4) scattered five hits and three walks to toss her the shutout.

Cooper (2-for-3), Corbin (2-for-3, 2-R HR) and Patton (2-for-3) all had two hits at the plate.

GAME 2: CSU 5-2

It was the Cougars again jumping on West Georgia in the first in the nightcap. Canady ripped a double into the left-center gap to get it all started before Cooper flipped a single to right field to set the table for the heart of the lineup. Paige Vincent later capitalized on the run-scoring chance with a sacrifice fly to give CSU the lead.

UWG took its first lead of the day in the second as Madison Gorsuch hit a two-run homer to left off of CSU starter Harley Dawson.

After Columbus State stranded the bases loaded in the second, back-to-back leadoff walks in the third put the tying run in scoring position. A groundout and another sac fly, this time off the bat of Patton, tied the game at two.

The Cougars broke the game open in the fourth after the first hitters reached base. It was a double parade to begin the inning as Madeline Parker, Laura Harris and Canady all hit two-baggers to give CSU a 3-2 lead. With runners on second and third and Cooper at the plate, UWG decided to try for a play at the plate off a comebacker to third. However, the throw was late, extending the lead to 4-2. Vincent later added her second sacrifice fly of the game to score the third run of the frame.

Riley Patton was cruising for Columbus State in relief until the first two hitters reached base to open the sixth. Cougar head coach Brad Huskisson went back to Corbin in the circle with the tying run at the plate, and the reigning PBC Pitcher of the Week didn't disappoint. After an error loaded the bases, Corbin added three more strikeouts to her daily ledger to keep CSU in front.

In the seventh, the righty capped off her day with two additional punch outs, including the final out of the game, to finish with 24 in nine innings of work.

R. Patton got the win after tossing three scoreless innings. She allowed just one hit but did issue four walks.

Canady was 3-for-4 with two doubles, while Vincent drove in two with no official at-bats. Cooper (1-for-4, 2B), Parker (1-for-3, 2B) and Harris (1-for-3, 2B) all had hits for the Cougars.

Columbus State will carry a four-game winning streak into Saturday's doubleheader against Peach Belt Conference rival Flagler College. The first game is set for a 1 p.m. first pitch at Cougar Field.
