VALDOSTA, Ga. - The Columbus State University women's tennis team defeated Valdosta State 6-1 on Wednesday afternoon. The non-conference matchup took place at the VSU Tennis Complex in Valdosta.
The No. 13 Lady Cougars improved to 8-3 while Valdosta fell to 4-5. The Blazers took the best out of CSU in doubles, taking two of the three matches. Singles play was a different story, though as Columbus State was able to take each match from Valdosta.
Amanda Citre and
Luise Sachs played at third doubles and took the only win from the Blazers in doubles play. The pair beat Julia Saving and Birte Langenstein 6-4, improving the pairs' record to an impressive 10-1. In first doubles,
Beatriz Lopez and
Candice Paya lost a very close 7-5 match against Estee Widdershoven and Eva Rivoal, falling to 4-1 as a duo.
Valentina Abrile and
Sara Ramirez Goncalves competed at second doubles and fell to 6-3 after dropping a match to Rachelle Starreveld and Hera Brynjarsdottir 6-1.
Columbus State bounced back in singles play as each Lady Cougar picked up a victory. Lopez competed in first singles and defeated Widdershoven 6-0 and 7-6, improving to 7-2. In second singles, Paya became 3-1 after dominating Rivoal 6-0, 6-1. Sachs advanced to 8-3 after playing at third singles and beating Starreveld 6-1 and 7-5. Abrile received her eighth singles win after a 6-2, 6-4 victory over Langenstein in fourth singles. Abrile leads the Lady Cougars with an overall 8-1 singles record. Playing at fifth singles, Citre jumped to 7-1 after she beat Saving in a 6-2, 6-2 victory. Lastly,
Agostina Bigotti competed in sixth singles and earned a close 7-6 and 7-5 win over Brynjarsdottir, upping her singles record 5-2.
CSU returns to the John W. Walden Tennis Center on Friday, April 2 for a Peach Belt Conference matchup against Flagler College at 2 p.m.
