Cougar Softball Sweeps Lander

Hannah Rose Corbin pitched two shutouts in the sweep.

GREENWOOD, S.C. - Hannah Rose Corbin pitched two shutouts to help the Columbus State University softball team sweep Peach Belt Conference rival Lander University 2-0 and 7-0 on Sunday afternoon.

Columbus State improved to 28-11 and 12-4 in the PBC, while Lander fell to 15-19 overall and 2-14 in conference action. It was also the fifth win in a row for the Cougars.

GAME 1: CSU 2-0

The Cougars and Bearcats were scoreless through the third, however, Corbin was cruising in the circle, striking out eight of the first nine hitters she faced. In the top of the fourth inning, Morgan Elston put the first run on the board, ripping her 14th home run of the season to give CSU a 1-0 lead.

Madeline Parker scored another run in the fifth inning, thanks to a bases loaded wild pitch by Liz Gollin. The rally started after Parker walked, advanced to second on a Caitlyn Canady single and made her way to third after a Katelyn Cooper walk.

That would be all the offense Corbin needed. The righty ended the day with 15 strikeouts and didn't allow her first hit until the sixth inning. In all, LU managed just two hits off of Corbin, who improved to 17-6 inside the circle in her seventh double-digit strikeout performance of the year.

Canady led Columbus State at the plate going 3-for-4, while Elston (solo HR) and Paige Vincent both added a hit.

GAME 2: CSU 7-0

Columbus State did damage in the third and fourth innings to give them a 7-0 victory over the Bearcats and the sweep in the nightcap.

The trio of Canady, Cooper and Corbin got things rolling in the third inning for the Cougars. Canady singled to lead off the inning and quickly found her way on second with a stolen base. Cooper put CSU in front with a RBI single before Corbin jacked a two-run homer, her 16th of the season, to make it a 3-0 lead.

The hitting parade continued as Lindsey Patton doubled right after Corbin's homer and Laura Harris reached on a fielding error by the shortstop. Elston got on with a fielder's choice to third base before Vincent and Grace Kiser both hit back-to-back RBI singles to push the margin to 5-0.

The Cougars added another two runs in the fourth thanks to back-to-back doubles from L. Patton and Harris. Harris later came around to score the final run of the game on a Elston groundout.

Corbin tossed another shutout in the circle to up her record to 18-6. It was her third shutout of the weekend as she struck out eight in the complete-game effort.

Kiser led CSU going 3-for-4 with a RBI. Canady, L. Patton (2 2Bs) and Parker added two hits, while four other Cougars picked up at least one RBI.
