DAHLONEGA, Ga. - The third-seeded Columbus State University softball team fell to third-ranked and top-seeded University of North Georgia 6-1 in the Peach Belt Conference semifinal round on Saturday afternoon.
The Cougars will now await to find out their fate for the upcoming NCAA Tournament after falling to 30-14 on the year.
The game was scoreless through the first two innings until North Georgia put one on the board in the bottom of the third inning. Cheyanne Mosteller singled and came around to score thanks to an RBI double to left centerfield from Olivia Sinquefield.
The Cougars tied it up an inning later as
Morgan Elston drew a leadoff walk before
Laura Harris advanced her to second on a single to right field.
Terra Odom replaced Elston at second as a pinch runner and later came around to score on a RBI single from
Madeline Parker.
The Nighthawks rallied in the bottom of the fifth, scoring five runs off of three hits and an error. With the bases loaded and no outs, Shelby Hammontree ripped a three-run triple through the right side to make it 4-1. Hammontree ended up scoring later in the inning off a Margaret Simmons fielder's choice before an RBI single from Mallory Parker made it 6-1.
Hannah Rose Corbin collected the loss inside the circle, falling to 20-9 on the season. Corbin struck out seven and only walked two in her six innings.
The Cougars only had three hits, from
Caitlyn Canady, Harris and Parker. Cooper, Elston and Dodson each walked once.
